Inviting Grace

The Rev. Meggin King, President of Maritime Conference,
The United Church of Canada 2013-2014

As this year’s President of Maritime Conference, I look forward to building relationships with many people, across our Conference and Synod, and throughout our communities. It is in community- and relationship-building that we invite each other into moments of grace. My hope for this blog is to share some of these moments with you: in wonder for the unexpected nature of grace, and in gratitude for the opportunities that I’ve been given to encounter grace in so many ways.

Fall Reflection

November 18, 2013    As I sit at my desk this morning, watching the sky darken and lighten, seeing the last leaves blowing on, and then off, the trees, I am mindful of how quickly this autumn season has gone by. I am preparing for this Sunday’s worship, and marveling at how it is already ‘Reign of Christ’, or ‘Christ the King’ Sunday. A week from today, I will be sitting here prepping for my Advent and Christmas services. Life is passing too quickly for my taste!    This fall has been a busy one for me. I should note...

President’s message

President’s Message  It happened again.  I blinked, and the summer passed me by. I hate when that happens. I realize that the calendar declares January to be the start of the new year, but for me, autumn is its real start. And I think there are many people who echo that sentiment.  Anyway, here I am, mid-September, back in my office, and ready to take on the responsibilities that go along with being clergy in a rural pastoral charge. Meetings happen. Services get planned. The Sunday School teachers gather to coordinate the curriculum and...

On the Mountain

On the Mountain

I’ve been using the UCC liturgy for the Season of Creation, this year. Every year for the last six years,I’ve thought to myself, “That would be fun to do!” and every year the fall season is upon me faster than I’d anticipated, and I wind up putting the Season of Creation ideas aside, and sticking with the lectionary readings. So I have to say I’m giving myself a bit of a pat on the back this year for jumping right in. This past Sunday, there was a theme around listening to the intellect of Creation, in “mountaintop” moments....

Time Out

Time Out

I’m back after four weeks of vacation,  and in all honesty I will say that it was more stressful than you’d  normally expect, for vacation time.  Don’t get me wrong- there was good stuff going on, including family time, time away, time camping-   but there was stress involved, too. The first week was spent here at home, with a houseful of people. People I love. But I have lived on my own for almost twenty years, and having a houseful of people, no matter how dear they are, was exhausting.  The second week of my...

Once Upon a Time

Earlier this month I spent a week in Truro, at the annual Atlantic Seminar in Theological Education (ASTE) event. For those unfamiliar with it, this is a wonderful week, held each year for the last 45 years, with a different theme each year. Every years since I’ve lived in the Maritimes — almost ten years, now– I’ve thought about going. Different speakers, different foci, different attendees. Ecumenical, and inter-faith. It all sounded so interesting! And each year, something else has interfered with my being able to...

So there I was… An introduction of sorts.

So there I was… An introduction of sorts.

So there I was, minding my own business at a regular Presbytery meeting, over a year ago, when Fran Fiddes turned to me and said, “Why don’t YOU run for Conference President?” Well, truth be told, I wasn’t exactly minding my own business. As Chair of Truro Presbytery at the time, I was in the process of chairing the meeting. We’d just had a presentation from David Hewitt, Conference Executive Secretary, and he’d  mentioned that there were no applicants for Conference President at that time. The rest, as...
