A Small Congregation Shares Their “Good Idea”

Recently a cheque  arrived from St. Andrew’s Kirk, a congregation on the Andrew Donald Pastoral  Charge in Saint John Presbytery.  It came with a story and a prayer! The Rev. Karen MacNeill explains: “This spring, our congregation invited people to make a donation to the Conference Centre in memory of Rev. Doug Woods. Doug was raised in our congregation and was sponsored into ministry from here. His sister still attends regularly. We gave people three or four weeks to consider what they would like to give, made sure that gifts...

The Margaree Congregational Church was organized in 1822 in the home of Irad and Armenia Hart. Their son, Josiah Hart, served as pastor until his death. Tales from the Pepper Box

Posted by on Sep 3, 2013 in Archives Committee, Featured Congregations | 0 comments

The Pepper Box was a newspaper/newsletter published for the Pine Hill Divinity Hall residence. The newspaper was filled with jokes, illustrations, accounts of sports events, biographies, and photographs, and made fun of just about every resident at Pine Hill. The Archives has approximately 20 cm worth of The Pepper Box and it’s just too fun not to share. Stay tuned in the upcoming months for more excerpts from The Pepper Box. For this first post I’m going to let the Editor of The Pepper Box in 1939 introduce the contents of the...

Hampton Pastoral Charge

Hampton Pastoral Charge is located in Kings County, New Brunswick. Prior to the 1870s, Methodist church services were held at the Baptist Church in Hampton. In the early 1870’s Methodist services began being held in Hampton Station, first in the old Athenaeum and then in Barnes Hall. Soon, the Methodists erected their own church building which was dedicated in May 1882. W. W. Frost and William Langstroth were the builders of the new church at a cost of $2500. The Hampton Methodist Church became the centre of a new circuit which included...

A little Presbyterian humour from the Archives….

It may be hard to believe but church folk in the 1800s and early 1900s actually had a sense of humor. Granted, they didn’t smile in photographs and they wore a lot of black but that doesn’t mean they didn’t like their jokes. The Presbyterian Witness, a newspaper published in the Maritimes pre-1925, is filled with lots of jokes.  So here’s a taste of what was considered funny by the Presbyterians in 1910: “A tourist once took refuge for the night in the cottage of an old lady. He asked her to wake him...
