Victoria Day in Toronto

For Victoria Day this year I had planned a trip down south. It’s something I like to do about every couple of years. This time I went to Toronto to meet up with a couple friends and enjoy the big city life for a long weekend also it’s justified after the rainy weather we’ve been having here and ‘technically’ (though Mother Nature has a different opinion) is the unofficial start of summer.

And it wasn’t all the summer-y in Toronto. There was some cool breezes and much to my dismay some rain. But that’s just how it goes and in my mind it’s obvious the impact that global warming has on our environment. But on to happier things.

First off my friend group when and checked out the Toronto Halal Bites Festival. It went on for three days and had all sorts of halal cuisine. There was even a live cooking show! There were a ton of people there and we even caught a drum performance from a Toront-based Taiko group. They were rad. My favourite food that I wad was from a cart called Sumaq, they are an Iraqi charcoal grill and always had good vibes. I mean its hard to mess up grilled meat and bread and they definitely delivered.

Next, we went up to Kensington Market, which was close to the festival. I love this place and on Sundays when we went, they have something called Pedestrian Sundays, where they kick out the cars but apparently, they’ve stopped because of a vendor war?? WTF. There was som funky graffiti to admire and lots of stores selling vintage and handmade goods. I was hungry so I grabbed some dope fish tacos while my friends met up with some other peoples in Bellevue Square Park.

I met someone very interesting once I returned to the group, a homebirth doula. Which was unexpected. Her name is Juliet and she’s been doing this for a while and is based in Kensington. One of my friends is seriously considering getting pregnant and met Juliet a while ago. My friend is a person of colour like myself and is skeptical of hospitals, which is something I know very little about. It was cool hearing about giving birth at home and is definitely something that I’ll put in the memory bank for later. I’ve never really thought about it, but you can totally do it if your pregnancy is low-risk and they even have tubs to rent?? So you can give birth in the water???

yum

That next Monday we explored China town as I have been craving some goo soup dumplings for a while. Dumplings and noodles are two food groups that I could live off of eternally and never be satiated. We also picked up some Dim Sum too.

Sadly later that night I had to go back home, but after all the busyness that Toronto brings, I’m looking forward to going back to the sea and breathing in some sea air again. Till next time.
